Am I the Only One Who Thinks AI Is Changing Everything?
I have a confession: sometimes, when I talk about AI with friends or colleagues, I get that look. You know the one—raised eyebrows, a polite smile, maybe even a little chuckle. It’s the same reaction you’d get if you casually mentioned aliens built the pyramids. But here’s the thing: I’m not wearing a tinfoil hat. I’m just paying attention.
The Disconnect Between What’s Happening and What People See
I’ve been dabbling in programming for over two decades. Started with QBasic, moved to C++, and even messed around with JavaScript. I’m no expert, but I know enough to recognize when something’s a big deal. And AI? It’s a very big deal.
Yet, when I bring up how AI is already replacing jobs—like the company that just laid off 16 of its 20 programmers—people act like I’m exaggerating. They nod along, but their eyes say, “Sure, Jan.” It’s like telling someone 1+1=2 and hearing them insist it’s 3.
The Industrial Revolution Comparison Doesn’t Hold Up
A lot of folks compare AI to the Industrial Revolution: “Machines took jobs, but they also created new ones!” But here’s the problem—AI isn’t a steam engine. It’s not just automating manual labor. It’s learning, adapting, and improving on its own. And it’s doing it faster than anyone expected.
Think about it: AI can write code, diagnose illnesses, even create art. It doesn’t get tired. It doesn’t need weekends. And it’s only getting smarter. So when people say, “Don’t worry, new jobs will appear,” I can’t help but wonder: what happens when AI can do those jobs too?
The Creepy Part? No One’s Talking About It Enough
The media touches on AI here and there, but it’s not front-page news. Not like it should be. Maybe it’s because the world’s on fire in other ways—wars, politics, inflation. Or maybe it’s because the full impact feels too distant, too sci-fi. But here’s the kicker: it’s already happening.
I’m not saying we’re all doomed to become AI’s pets (though, let’s be honest, that’s a terrifying thought). But I am saying we need to talk about this more. Because if we don’t, we’ll wake up one day and realize the rules have changed—and no one bothered to tell us.
So, Am I Just a Conspiracy Theorist?
Maybe. Or maybe I’m just one of the few looking at the numbers and asking, “Hey, does this add up to anyone else?”
What about you? Do you see AI as an inevitable shift, or am I just seeing shadows on the wall? Let’s chat in the comments.
